The Cartier signature: an icon of fine jewelry since 1847

The beginnings of the Maison Cartier were guided by Louis-François Cartier who, in 1847, took over his master's workshop located at 29 rue Montorgueil in the capital. In a few years, the artisan jeweler made a name for himself by producing, in particular, the jewels of Princess Mathilde, cousin of Napoleon III. Parisian high society quickly recognized the talent of this new Maison, which would soon enjoy an international reputation.

A new character will contribute to making Cartier the jeweler it is today: Louis Cartier, in 1899, decides to move the historic boutique by choosing the famous 13 rue de la Paix. That same year is marked by a new jewelry trend: the garland style, introduced by Cartier and which allows artisans to use an innovative material, platinum. Certainly, Cartier always knows how to follow trends and breathe new life into them, the House will thus adapt to the new forms of Art Deco while continuing to supply the greatest royal families in Europe, like the court of King Edward VII. Soon, a subsidiary is opened in London, but also in New York, Cartier diversifies its production by offering clocks, but also new motifs like the Panther, we also see the appearance of pieces that are today highly sought after like the Tank watch.

In 1924, a new future icon was born: the three-band ring, later named Trinity. It was quickly adopted, notably by Jean Cocteau. In 1924, Louis Cartier wanted to create a piece of jewelry that would be a manifesto, universal, playful with pure and perfect lines. To do this, he chose to use yellow gold, pink gold and platinum. Very quickly, a man took possession of his three rings, a poet and an artist: Jean Cocteau. He wore these rings as a symbol of love for Jean Marais: the first ring represented him, the second embodied Jean, the last materialized their love. A true creative icon, the Trois Ors de Cartier ring broke with the classic codes of fine jewelry: the very fact of mixing three precious metals of different colors was audacious! And this audacity would continue to follow Trinity jewelry through time. The Trinity collection never ceased to reinvent itself: the three rings took on varied, ever more creative forms.
