Boucheron, the first house on Place Vendome

Frederic Boucheron founded his house in Paris in 1858, at just 26 years old, building his early reputation on inventive, art-driven jewelry rather than convention. In 1893, Boucheron opened a boutique at 26 Place Vendome, the first jeweler to settle on the square that would later become home to nearly every major jewelry house. Frederic Boucheron reportedly chose the address for its light, since the west-facing store caught the sun for most of the day, ideal for showing diamonds and gemstones at their best. In the 1880s, the house had already made its name for technical daring with the Question Mark necklace, the first necklace designed without a visible clasp.
