The great history of earrings
Since the Neolithic period, men and women have been wearing ear jewelry. Various archaeological traces confirm their existence in Mesopotamia, India and Greece.
If Antiquity is characterized by a certain craze for earrings, the fall of the Roman Empire almost led to the disappearance of these jewels.
In the Middle Ages, wearing earrings was definitely no longer popular in the West. The fashion for wigs and hairstyles that covered the ears made these jewels invisible, hence their decline in popularity. Christian tradition also reprimanded ear piercing as a body modification.
It was not until the beginning of the 16th century that earrings finally came back into fashion. In Italy, Spain, France and England, men and women frequently had their ears pierced. From precious jewels, we then moved on to more modest and minimalist pieces with the French Revolution of 1789.
In the 19th century, the coronation of Napoleon I gradually marked the return of extravagant jewels. In the following century, the trend for up-do hairstyles allowed stud earrings to gain notoriety.
After the First World War, the Art Deco movement offered the opportunity for jewelry to renew itself by focusing on brightly colored materials, such as coral. Women's hairstyles became shorter and earrings became longer. Thus, the earrings of the time were characterized by a strong maximalism. In the 1930s, jewelers developed clip-on clasps for non-pierced ears.
From the 1970s onwards, studs became the ear jewellery of choice for women. Men, for their part, adopted the wearing of earrings again in the 1980s and 1990s, particularly in the worlds of music, sport and cinema. From the 2000s onwards, body modifications were more in the spotlight than ever. Earrings were now worn in a thousand and one ways, for example in accumulation on a single ear at the level of the lobe and cartilage.
Today, ear jewelry is both imagined and worn as real fashion accessories. While they retain a religious or cultural dimension in certain contexts, they also and above all accompany the self-affirmation of their owners.
