Yellow Gold Brooch with Emeralds and Rubies
An 18-carat yellow gold brooch in the shape of a turtle. The openwork shell is composed of flowers of various sizes crafted from Amati yellow gold, each set at its center with a brilliant-cut emerald. The turtle’s eyes are represented by rubies. Vintage animal-themed brooches played a central role in the creations of the great French jewelry houses between the 1950s and 1970s. The Van Cleef & Arpels bestiary, in particular, exemplifies this trend toward figurative and playful jewelry, designed to be worn every day. In contrast to Art Deco brooches—which were often rigid and heavily set with gemstones—these pieces explore supple, textured forms where yellow gold is paired with colored gemstones, Enamel, or Cabochons in a freer, more narrative style.
This brooch was likely crafted by the Pons workshop, which worked for many of the Houses on Place Vendôme.
