You may not be familiar with its name or design. Cartier’s creative catalog is brimming with unusual timepieces. The Cartier Diabolo is no exception: it is undoubtedly one of Cartier’s least known and most distinctive models. 

The Cartier Diabolo appears to take its name from the iconic game of the same name: the watch plays with curves, symmetry, and volume. Unlike other Cartier models, it features a fairly thick, rounded case. It is framed by two lugs, each topped with a blue sapphire that directly echoes the winding crown, which is also adorned with a prominent sapphire Cabochon. The interplay of volume is further highlighted by the domed crystal. 

Certain design elements cherished by Cartier remain unchanged: a white dial, a railway-track minute scale, Roman numerals, elegant blued “apple” or “Breguet” hands, and the Cartier signature. 

This 1994 Cartier Diabolo, complete with its documentation and original pouch, could be described as a subtle balance between horological precision and Parisian flair.

History

The Cartier Diabolo was first conceived in 1992. It embodies the spirit of the 1990s with its penchant for experimentation and whimsy. It dares to play with shapes, even though the Cartier Diabolo draws inspiration from the designs of certain ladies’ watches created in the early 20th century.

Although the Cartier Diabolo has been produced in several versions (mechanical or Quartz, with or without a chronograph, in various dimensions), it has not enjoyed the same production volume as iconic Cartier models such as the Tank and Santos.
