The VAN CLEEF & ARPELS "PA 49" watch is defined entirely by a single line. A perfectly round case, a bezel edged in 18-carat yellow gold and steel, Roman numeral hour markers, and nothing else. The design has remained virtually unchanged since 1949, which speaks volumes about its timeless appeal.
It is the lugs that make this watch unique. Slender, articulated bars of gold and steel connect the case to the Bracelet, with no lugs or visible welds: the watch appears to simply rest on the leather. It’s the kind of detail you only notice at second glance—and then can’t take your eyes off.
The date window at 3 o’clock, the small seconds hand, and the Quartz movement make it a decidedly practical watch for everyday life. Furthermore, the combination of gold and steel allows it to complement anything you already wear—whether yellow gold, white gold, silver, or steel.
