Antique Heart Pendant in Gold, Silver, and Diamonds Flemish heart pendant in silver, gold, and diamonds. The lower portion features an openwork heart formed by scrollwork, with a movable center piece set with a pear-shaped rose-cut diamond. The entire piece is paved with diamonds set on a straw-like base. The upper part depicts a torch, a bow, and arrows. The Flemish heart is a jewelry style typical of 17th- and 18th-century Flanders. The Flemish heart is first and foremost a piece of sentimental jewelry. The torch represents passionate love, as do the bow and arrows—attributes of Cupid—and the foliage, which symbolizes fertility. It is also a religious piece traditionally given on August 15 for the Feast of the Assumption. Finally, this piece reflects social status, as it is closely associated with the Flemish merchant class.
