"Oyster Perpetual": 2 of the oldest words in the Rolex universe, 2 words we've seen so much we don't read them anymore. 2 words that sum up the entire Rolex philosophy: Oyster for the case that's as watertight as an oyster, and Perpetual because the automatic movement makes it work automatically as long as it's worn. With 5mm more, this watch would be called "Explorer": the watch of the Rolex professional range, recognizable by its 3 - 6 - 9 legible in all circumstances. It's hard not to recognize the nod to its big sister!
How to wear it?
Black dials go with everything, that's a fact. Its rather limited Diameter adds to its versatility. With its large numerals, the explorer dial can be considered "sporty". And yet... this Watch is just as at home on the beach as it is on the ski slopes or in the office!
Why did Françoise choose it?
Obviously for our love of Rolexes, especially when they're from the 1990s (best reliability ratio, especially water resistance and Vintage look) and in 31mm! But particularly for this dial, iconic to Rolex through the Explorer, rarely found on women's wrists.
History
The Oyster Perpetual is the beginning of the great Rolex saga. In fact, it was the name of the first automatic, water-resistant Watch, released in 1931. This range transformed the name of Rolex, a young brand of the Period, and established it as the watchmaker of technical and sporting feats. Since then, most Rolex watches bear the inscription Oyster Perpetual in addition to their "range" name (Submariner, Explorer, DateJust...) to recall this original filiation. To return to a simple "Oyster Perpetual" is to go back to the origins.
And we can't forget the reference to the legendary Rolex Explorer, whose history began in 1952 with an automatic, water-resistant watch featuring for the first time these large 3 - 6 - 9 numerals to maximize legibility. It was with this Watch that Sir Edmund Hillary became the first man to reach the summit of Mount Everest.
