Although Brazil is the world's leading producer of amethysts, the majority of these precious stones come from mines in Uruguay . They are renowned for their exceptional clarity and deep purple color, often enhanced with red and blue reflections.
Located in northern Uruguay , on the border with Brazil, the Artigas region is world-renowned and often called the “amethyst capital of the world” .
“The Empress of Uruguay”: A natural treasure
The largest amethyst geode ever discovered also comes from the Artigas region. Nicknamed “The Empress of Uruguay” , it measures 3.27 meters high and weighs 2.5 tons , slightly more than an adult elephant.
Purchased for $75,000 by René and Nelleke Boissevain , this incredible geode is now on display at the Crystal Caves Museum in Atherton, Australia .
